Yupo paper

Yupo, a synthetic paper company, did an ad that I thought was clever. They had the whole page printed on one of their papers and in the center was a postcard. The postcard is eye-catching and funny. I think it’s cool that it gives you a reason to take it out and have a paper sample, to touch it and experience it’s uniqueness, and then it also has a reuse.

Ralph Steadman

I find the work of Ralph Steadman very inspriational. His illustration is very suggestive and I love his use of emotive type.
I think that the fact that his interests are diverse and drive his work is important in that it keeps his approach fresh and passionate.
Also check out the work he has done with Flying Dog Brewery.

I think that the gelaskins are a purple cow and they serve to protect your ipod (free pizza).

Remarkable People

I was in Barnes and Noble a few months ago, just browsing, when this woman who was a stranger to me just starting talking and telling me random things about herself, her life, and her family. I thought, oh God, how do I get away from this person…until I realized she was very interesting and had quite a few stories to share! I listened for a few minutes and then we went our separate ways.
Well, I ran into her again today. It took me a few minutes to recall how she was familiar, where I had seen her before, and what our interaction had been. But I knew we had encountered each other before. She is very memorable for a lot of reasons!
She is tattooed and pierced from head to toe like nobody’s business for starters. But this really doesn’t shock us anymore, expect for the fact that she is in her seventies.
This woman is sick and has a fatal disease. She is dying and she knows it! She has lived an incredibly rich life and she is grateful for every minute. She finds joy and humor in the little things and is fighting every step of the way. I am so inspired by her will.
I am hoping to photograph her to help share the stories.

Seth Ideas that struck!

UH-humm, excuse me… We need to be an interruption in everyone else’s daily life!
Call attention to ourselves like nobody’s business, but ours, because it’s all about us (Not our kids anymore)!
We’re in the fashion business…Hey, wanna see my socks?
Sell to the people who want it…
Organic growth, Word of Mouth
Tell it to someone who cares…”The people with the $20,000 stereos don’t like new music”
BE REMARKABLE
SAFETY IS RISKY…be at the fringes

Hey Baby, What’s Your Otaku?

The otaku, the passionate obsessive, the information age’s embodiment of the connoisseur, more concerned with the accumulation of data than of objects…

Kiss Someone!

I was out running errands today and I saw a purple Hershey Kiss! As luck would have it, I unfortunately did not have my camera, but I’ll tell the story anyway.
There was a truck, but you can’t really call it a truck, it was a Hershey Mobile! The front was in the style of trucks we are used to seeing, but the body was three huge Hershey Kisses- and the center one was purple. I kid you not! It was awesome; I laughed out loud to myself! It was the experience of seeing something so different and seemingly so out of place, but perfectly acceptable at the same time.
Then, to top it off, the unofficial plate or tag on the back end said “Kiss Someone”!
I love it! It kissed me and made me want to kiss someone!

Are Designers the Enemy of Design?

I enjoyed this article. It brings up a few very interesting points.
Everyone wants to be a designer! And why not, why shouldn’t we be able to put our mark on everything and customize everything to serve as a reflection of how we see ourselves or how we want to be seen. It makes the job of the serious that much more challenging. I love the analogy of playing together in the design sandbox. There’s a lesson in working together. We can work wisely and consciously with concern for the impact and outcome.
Designing Substainability is the key here! I agree that this is going to have to be one of our main concerns as we design for the future. The future where “Design by ego ends, and Design by Conservation Begins”.
Why do we have to constantly replace everything with the bigger, better, newer, cooler version? The basic design could be made to be expanded upon.
We should stop being so wasteful and thinking of everything as disposable. I think that it’s going to come up more and more. At the seminar, someone asked about the materials used for the construction of temporary booths. Were the materials recycled and/or recyclable?
And of course, we all know about the importance of reuse from our bags in Sylvia’s class!

Pandora’s Box

Well, I’ll start out by saying that Pandora’s Box might be an apt metaphor for media arts!
But I did want to share the Pandora site (pandora.com) with any music lovers out there. I don’t know how it compares to others or if I’m even sharing anything new, but I think it’s pretty cool. I love music and I am constantly trying to learn about new and seasoned artists that I have yet to be exposed to. It’s a personalized jukebox of music you might not own.
If there’s something better out there please let me know, otherwise, sit back (sketch away), and enjoy!

Where are the books?

I guess in this digital world it is no longer necessary of even practical for book stores, or even libraries, to stock an adequate selection of research material. We can find it all online, right?! And their response is that they can order it. Well, yeah, but so can anyone else and probably for less money. I know we are supposed to be learning to research from all angles, but it also seems like the most comprehensive information is available through the internet.
I think that the personal interaction and “the experience” of research is on it’s way out…quickly. How are these stores going to compete? What will the point be of having a physical location for a library?

PC Gallery

It’s cool to see all of the new student work! We certainly are a talented and creative bunch!
I love that there is so much variety and personality. It is always really inspiring to see the very different directions people take the same assignment. It makes you realize that what you have inside your head and your heart really does matter and can make a difference.
