Found a quote by Paul Rand, “Design is so simple, that’s why it is so complicated”.
This seems to sum it up and seems very appropriate to the industry. Hours of research and thought go into an idea before it can become actualized. As with our assignment for Intro to Design, we need to fully understand our purpose as the designer and how we are to meet our client’s needs. We are required to truly understand them in order to create an accurate portrayal. In the case of a logo we are asked to create a very simple representation of something far more complicated and encompassing. And then we run the risk of it looking like something anyone could have come up with.

Skeptical Embrace
April 5, 2007 at 5:01 am (Uncategorized)
I think that it is going to be very interesting to observe the effects of all of the technological advancements and developments. The changes are happening so quickly and all during our lifetime. It is amazing to me what has happened in the past few years and it’s exciting, and frankly a little scary, to think about what’s in store for the next ten. I obviously appreciate all of the benefits and conveniences that are now available and the fact that we are becoming so connected and so global, but at the same time I can’t help but wonder how this is going to impact us negatively.
There are little things that I’ll miss, like not having tangible CDs. I’ve always used the art and packaging to identify with the artist and categorize the music in my head, or to find it at a quick glance. Scrolling through a list on an Ipod is not the same. That said though, I love my Ipod. So there will always be pros and cons and we really can’t prevent any of the advances.
The camera on the Mac does freak me out a little. Is someone watching and monitoring you… will they be eventually? It’s reminiscent of the book 1984, big brother conspiracy stuff. Will everything we do be monitored and recorded because it’s all done on the computer? GPS- they know where you are. Credit cards and banking online- they know when, how, and what you spend your money on.
Will kids play outside anymore or on a virtual playground?
It fascinates me because I’ve resisted technology and been unsure and intimidated by it, and now I’m trying to embrace it with skepticism.
New Quarter

I have to say that I am excited about the new quarter and the work we will be doing. The vibe seems positive and everyone seems to be refreshed and in good spirits. Octane was fun and it was nice to finally be able to hang out with everyone in a different environment!
The seminar today was entertaining and informative. I appreciated his knowledgeable, yet unpretentious, approach to the presentation.
I look forward to exploring what media architecture is and means while listening to some Billie Holiday as I prepare my logo ideas for her!
Oh yeah, and I can’t wait to make a big mess with ink for Anne. We thought cut paper was hard to clean up!
Thanks Mason for the quotes and you have a very cool name.
